An Open Letter to Fellow Small Business Owners,

Things got exceedingly ugly and excruciating. My young stepson got on the bus one day and told the driver that he was going to starve to death because we didn’t have any money for food…the bus driver called me and offered to send over some hotdogs. The delivery trucks kept getting stuck in the mud because we didn’t have money for gravel. We had to pull them out using a human powered winch—my arms still ache!
We needed a well and had no money to drill one so I had to cart water everyday from miles away. Customers took forever to pay so we never knew when we’d have money to pay our bills. I had to give myself haircuts because there was no money for such luxuries—I only hope no pictures surface…hair cutting is definitely not one of my strengths. Lightening hit the house and fried the stove and we couldn’t afford to replace it. So, I cooked on a woodstove in the middle of the summer in South Carolina.
In short, everything that COULD go wrong DID in SPADES!
After a year and a half of unspeakable agony, the business was put out of its misery. My misery continued on for several years (someday over a glass of apple juice maybe I’ll share the gory details). But the bottom line is at the tender age of 28, I was just another small business statistic.
Confessions of a Small Business Failure
I never could have imagined myself being a small business failure. I mean, I had a bachelor’s degree in Business with a minor in Small Business Management. Surely, that made me knowledgeable enough to run a small business! Hey, I was one of those brainy types that could ace any test, memorize any text book, and quote Shakespeare and scripture! So how come I failed at running a business?
